Ukraine 2009
The idea for this trip started as we were informed that a Visa for Ukraine is no longer needed due to a Eurovision Songcontest which was held in Kiev. The chance to see some good old Russian stuff and the opportunity to fly on an AN-24 was the goal for this trip.
We informed us months in advance which routing we’ll take and which airlines would be nice.
15MAY2009 DTM – KBP Wizzair Ukraine A320-200 UR-WUA
We used the lowcost service of Wizzair Ukraine for our trip to Kiev. It was a typical “Ryanair-style” flight. We landed in the evening and went to the rental car center and further straight to the Hotel.

We went further on the coast and pure chance we entered the Russian airbase Kacha (UKFA) without any notice. As soon as we realized that were are on an actice airbase with russian anti-submarine Beriev Be-12 aircrafts and helicopters we decided disappear immediately. I just took a few pictures while driving.
After this adventure we headed back to the airport of SIP.

My personal highlight of this trip was on this day. A flight in an AN-24 of Lugansk Airlines opf Aersvit. We booked this flight months in advance and it wasn’t the cheapest but we preferred it instead of the other options with Boeing B737 or Saab340.

We started at ODS for some spotting but the traffic was very low so we decided to drive aprox 150km to the airport of Nikolaev were some IL-76, An-12, An-2 and other aircrafts were stored.
Our intention was to get ramp access in order to get some perfect pictures. We asked some manager and at least the local police chef but after we waited for hours access was denied. So we tried to do the best of it and took some pictures through windows.
